Businesses in Exantis

Of course,  the locals are industrious people who always have something to do (like tending to their olives, harvesting the grapes, making Raki or just working their land). But I can only think of three businesses in Exantis, but I am sure there are more. At this point I must stress that I have no conflicting interests with any of these. I know the owners, am happy to tell you about them, but I don't get any kick-back for doing so.

Taverna Maria is the focus of the village and acts as restaurant, kafenion, community centre, dance hall and post office. It is a wonderful place and cannot be missed. It is open most of the time and serves drinks, local snacks and meals in the evening.

P1000465Going to the taverna as a visitor, as in much of Greece, can feel a bit awkward as it all feels very "local", but don't worry. The initial stares are indications of genuine interest and you will find the people there very welcoming. Some of my best times in Exantis have been in Taverna Maria's, listening to Aristides' stories about the German invasion in WW2 (with wild gesticulations!), enjoying a spirited birthday party where - inevitably - the tsikoudia comes out or just watching with interest as something happens in Exantis, like a car driving by. If you are invited to play cards, dance, or just join a table of locals, then you know you have been truly welcomed.
